Team Background Information

Canada’s National Women’s Team has captured all six Women’s World Hockey Championships. In 2001, Canada has a mix of experience and youth. Younger players have had success with the National Under 22 Team and have secured spots with Canada’s squad for the World Championship.

Over the course of the 2000-2001 season, Canada opened by capturing the 2000 Four Nations Cup in Provo, Utah, posting a thrilling 2-0 victory in the final game against the USA. Canada next got together in January 2001, sweeping a five-game series against Sweden before two one-goal setbacks against the USA at the TSN Challenge games in Red Deer, AB and during NHL All-Star Weekend, in Denver, CO. Over thirty players played during the season, giving head Coach Danièle Sauvageau and assistant coaches Melody Davidson and Wally Kozak an opportunity to see veterans and young hopefuls in international competition.

The 2001 World Championship roster boasts 16 players that captured gold with Canada’s National Women’s Team at the 2000 Women’s Worlds in Mississauga, ON. Four players (Dana Antal, Correne Bredin, Isabelle Chartrand, Colleen Sostorics) will be taking part in their first ever Women’s Worlds, but all have extensive international experience with both the National Team and the National Under 22 Team.
