KITCHENER (ONTARIO) TO HOST TOP INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S HOCKEY TEAMS AT 2006 FOUR NATIONS CUP

CALGARY, AB – Only days following Canada’s second straight Olympic gold medal in women’s hockey, Hockey Canada announced on Monday, that the City of Kitchener and the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA) will host the next major international women’s hockey event in the fall of 2006. The 2006 Four Nations Cup will be held at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium Complex from November 7-11, 2006.

"Today's announcement that the City of Kitchener will play host to the 2006 Four Nations Cup is very exciting news for local hockey enthusiasts, and indeed, for our entire community," said Kitchener Mayor Carl Zehr. "We are honoured by the opportunity to welcome these talented women to our city and look forward to making them, their coaches, and their fans, feel like a part of our community."

“We look forward to hosting the first international women's hockey competition following Team Canada' gold medal win in Turin,” said OWHA Executive Director Fran Rider. “The Ontario Women's Hockey Association welcomes the opportunity of renewing our successful hosting partnership with Hockey Canada and the City of Kitchener. “

The Four Nations Cup has been a staple of international women’s hockey since 1996. The event will feature the four top-ranked teams in the World : Canada (2006 and 2002 Olympic Champions, eight-time World Champions), USA (2005 World Champions, 2006 Olympic Bronze medalists, 2002 Olympic silver medalists, 1998 Olympic Champions), Sweden (2006 Olympic silver medalists) and Finland (fourth place at 2006 and 2002 Olympic Games, and at 2005 World Championship).

The 2006 Four Nations Cup will consist of a single round robin between the four teams, followed by a Gold Medal game, featuring the top two teams and a Bronze Medal game, featuring the teams that finish the round robin in 3rd and 4th position.

Ticket details and the game schedule for the 2006 Four Nations Cup will be announced shortly.

Hockey Canada’s official broadcaster TSN/RDS will be broadcasting the 2006 Four Nations Cup Gold Medal game.

From 1996 through 1999, this event was called the Three Nations Cup, with Canada, USA and Finland taking part. In 2000, and permanently since the 2002 season, it has been the Four Nations Cup, and Sweden has been a regular participant. In 2001, USA was unable to participate. Canada has won the Nations Cup a total of eight times (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005) while the USA has won it twice (1997, 2003).

The 2006 Four Nations Cup will mark the first of two major international women’s hockey events being held in Canada during the 2006-07 season. The 2007 IIHF World Women’s Hockey Championship will be held in Winnipeg, MB in April, 2007.

KITCHENER (ONTARIO) ACCUEILLERA LES MEILLEURES ÉQUIPES INTERNATIONALES DE HOCKEY FÉMININ À LA COUPE DES QUATRE NATIONS 2006

CALGARY, ALBERTA – Quelques jours seulement après que le Canada a remporté sa deuxième médaille d’or olympique consécutive en hockey féminin, Hockey Canada a annoncé, lundi, que la ville de Kitchener et l’Association de hockey féminin de l’Ontario (OWHA) allaient accueillir le prochain événement important au hockey féminin international à l’automne 2006. La Coupe des quatre nations 2006 se tiendra au Kitchener Memorial Auditorium Complex du 7 au 11 novembre 2006.

" L’annonce d’aujourd’hui indiquant que la ville de Kitchener accueillera la Coupe des quatre nations 2006 est une nouvelle très excitante pour tous les partisans locaux du hockey et, à vrai dire, pour toute la communauté », a dit le maire de Kitchener, Carl Zehr. " Nous sommes honorés d’avoir l’occasion d’accueillir ces femmes de talent dans notre ville et nous ferons tout pour qu’elles, ainsi que leurs entraîneurs et partisans, sentent qu’elles font partie de notre communauté »

" L’Association de hockey féminin de l’Ontario est heureuse de pouvoir renouer son partenariat réussi avec Hockey Canada et la ville de Kitchener. »

La Coupe des quatre nations est un événement clé du hockey féminin international depuis 1996. Ce tournoi regroupera les quatre meilleures équipes de hockey féminin du monde, soit celles du Canada (championne olympique en 2006 et 2002, huit fois championne du monde), des États-Unis (championne du monde en 2005, médaillée de bronze olympique en 2006, médaillée d’argent olympique en 2002 et championne olympique en 1998), de la Suède (médaillée d’argent olympique en 2006) et de la Finlande (quatrième rang aux Jeux olympiques de 2006 et 2002 et au championnat mondial 2005).

La Coupe des quatre nations comportera un tournoi à la ronde simple entre les quatre équipes, suivi d’un match pour la médaille d’or mettant en vedette les deux meilleures équipes et d’un match pour la médaille de bronze opposant les formations occupant les 3e et 4e rangs.

Le diffuseur officiel de Hockey Canada, TSN/RDS, diffusera le match pour la médaille d’or de la Coupe des quatre nations 2006.

De 1996 à 1999, l’événement était connu sous le nom de Coupe des trois nations puisqu’il regroupait alors le Canada, les États-Unis et la Finlande. En 2000 et de façon permanente depuis la saison 2002, le tournoi est devenu la Coupe des quatre nations puisque la Suède s’est joute au groupe. En 2001, les États-Unis n’ont pu participer. Le Canada a remporté la Coupe des nations à huit reprises (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005) tandis que les États-Unis l’ont remporté à deux reprises (1997, 2003).

La Coupe des quatre nations 2006 sera le premier de deux événements majeurs de hockey féminin international présentés au Canada pendant la saison 2006-07. Le Championnat mondial de hockey féminin 2007 de l’IIHF aura lieu à Winnipeg au Manitoba en avril 2007.
