OWHA TEAM ONTARIO
The Ontario Women’s Hockey Association’s Canada Winter Games Team arrives in the GTA on February 17th where it will practice and play 2 games prior to its departure for Halifax on Saturday morning. Team Ontario is the defending Canada Winter Games and National Under 18 Championship Team.
Close to 300 players tried out for the 20 spots (eighteen skaters and 2 goaltenders) on Team Ontario. Preliminary selection camps were held in the spring of 2010 with 80 players advancing to the final selection camp in October. Preparation as a team for the Canada Winter Games consisted of a camp in December followed by a training retreat at Teen Ranch in Caledon in January. In addition to these camps, players train and participate on club teams. Nineteen of the players play in the PWHL (Provincial Women’s Hockey League) with one playing midget AA in Thunder Bay.
Thirteen of the players were selected to the National Under 18 Team where they won silver medals at the 2011 Women’s Under 18 World Championship in Stockholm, Sweden.
The Ontario Women’s Hockey Association appreciates the opportunity to play under the Ontario flag as members of the multi-sport, Team Ontario. We also welcome the chance to join our female hockey colleagues throughout Canada as we showcase excellence and continue to grow the game.
