            WORLD GIRL'S HOCKEY DAY

World Girld Hockey Day

CELEBRATION OF FEMALE HOCKEY AT ALL AGES
IIHF WORLD GIRLS' HOCKEY DAY

>>> LIST OF ACTIVITIES <<<

WHAT IS THE WORLD GIRLS' HOCKEY DAY?

It's time to celebrate the future of female hockey around the world!
On 2nd October 2011, the IIHF is hosting the first annual World Girls' Hockey Day.
Female hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in the world .
Events like Girl's Hockey Days and similar programs that are being run in many countries.
It is an opportunity for girls of all ages to try ice hockey.

WHAT CAN OWHA MEMBERS DO?

We are looking for your ideas to bring girls from their community together on the ice so they can:

  • be introduced to basic skills in hockey in a positive, fun and safe environment.
  • learn about opportunities in ice hockey in their community.
  • learn about fair play, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
  • meet new friends and have a chance to fall in love with a new sport.
  • celebrate female hockey
  • promote female hockey

We are looking for your ideas to create initiatives and publicize existing activities to bring exposure to female hockey across Ontario.

The Ontario Women's Hockey Association has registered with the IIHF as a host and will incorporate all OWHA programs as part of the Ontario, Canada Celebration.

The goal is to give girls a chance to play.
The goal is to give exposure and credibility to the wonderful role models in Ontario.

WHAT DO I DO?

Post the OWHA World Girls' Hockey Day Banner on your web site
Send an email to info@owha.on.ca to advise your interest in participation.
We will send you a form so you can provide details of your event.
Attach any flyers or other information you wish us to post or link from the OWHA web site.

If you are running a program for new players:

  • advertise within your community about the event to draw as many participants as you have space for.
  • organize ice time and arrange some coaches to run some very basic and fun drills.
  • have a certified person at the event to take care of any first aid needs based on the legal requirements.

SOME SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO PROMOTE THE EVENT OR ADD TO THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • have members of the women's national team, under-18 provincial team, CWHL, PWHL, CIS or role model players from your association be part of the event, famous coaches or hockey legends who want to support the event - on the ice, autograph sessions, and just sharing their love of the game.
  • have each team member bring one friend to the event (if you have 15 players on your team, you will automatically have 15 new girls coming!).
  • hold information sessions for parents on the sport and the opportunities
  • do off-ice hockey activities for younger girls or participants who cannot skate in addition to the on-ice portion so they get a chance to use a stick and ball while in shoes as they may not be able to do many of the activities on the ice.

Send an email to info@owha.on.ca to advise your interest in participation.
