The CAO along with Barrie Shepley, Sydney Olympic Triathlon Coach
and Aquafina are collaborating to organize some highly valuable
2-hour evening workshops for Ontario coaches every month. Coaches
of every degree of skill are invited to attend the series of monthly
seminars starting on November 7, 2003 in Caledon, Ontario. Each
month, one international coach, sport expert or motivational speaker
will discuss a sport related topic of interest to coaches. Topics
for the upcoming months include:
- Encouraging athletes to take responsibility with Rowing Coach
- Mike Spracklen
- Using Sport Psychology to Maximize Performance
- Emotional Intelligence Strategies for High Performers
- Enhancing Skill Performance in Sport
- Sport Nutrition for Athletes and for Families
- Dealing with the Media and Maximizing your Sport's Visibility
“Coaches need to be supported and recognized regularly”
said former Olympic coach Barrie Shepley. “One of the goals
of the monthly seminar series is to provide a free, positive environment
for coaches to continue learning, and being motivated themselves”
said the man who watched Olympic gold medalist Simon Whitfield make
history in Sydney. “My objective each month is to provide
a world class speaker to stimulate and challenge the thinking of
coaches, athletes and parents (the three legs of the sport model)
said the V.P. of the CAO.
“We are very excited to have Sheldon Persad, one of North
America’s current strength and conditioning experts prepared
to kick off this very important monthly learning experience”
said Shepley. Coaches are encouraged to bring athletes, assistant
coaches and parents to these free monthly talks. Free parking, free
entrance and the opportunity to win some draw prizes should be additional
bonus reasons for attending the monthly presentations.
The Riverdale Fitness Centre is part of C3’s non-profit training
centre for athletes. Located in the historic town of Inglewood Ontario
(made famous by 3x Olympic alpine skier Laurie Graham), the centre
is a residence, 5000 sqt fitness & testing centre, mountain
bike trails, running track and open water quarry. Developed by Sydney
Olympic coach Barrie Shepley, the centre is a GTA resource for any
coach or athlete to be supported. The monthly seminars for coaches
are going to be a great compliment to the work of the C3 Centre,
which is already one-of-a-kind in the province of Ontario with its
multi-sport focus.
The CAO is an independent, non-profit organization providing additional
education opportunities, recognition and information exchange for
coaches in all sports. The association is "coach-led"
and believes in the concept of "coaches helping coaches"
for the benefit of sport.
