Sarnia and Ontario Women’s
Hockey Association to host
ESSO Women’s National
Hockey Championship
May 12, 2004
Sarnia, Ontario (May 10, 2004): The supremacy of Canadian women’s
hockey will be decided in Sarnia, Ontario in March, 2005.
Hockey Canada has announced that the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association
(OWHA) has been awarded the 2005 ESSO Women’s National Hockey
Championship, and is bringing the event to the Sarnia Sports
and Entertainment Centre (SSEC).
“We’re excited that we’ve signed an agreement with the OWHA to
bring this national showcase to such a great hockey town,” said
Bob Nicholson, President of Hockey Canada. “The enthusiasm that
the local committee has put into finalizing this agreement, has
our organization confident that the 2005 event will set a new standard
for excellence.”
“Sarnia has shown a huge commitment to women’s hockey, and the
organization required to put on a premier event,” said Fran Rider,
Executive Director of the OWHA. “The Sarnia Girls Hockey Association
and their sister organizations in the area have proven their expertise
in the development and promotion of female hockey events.”
The OWHA has vast experience in organizing championships at the
local, provincial, national and international levels.
SSEC General Manager Mike Richardson promises a memorable experience
for all the participants and spectators.
“With our two NHL size ice surfaces and our proven ability to host
a variety of major events, our whole organization is looking forward
to the challenge. We have committed to partnering with the OWHA
to present this event for our community, local girls’ hockey and
women’s hockey in Canada, and a chance to once again demonstrate
that we have one of the best sports facilities in the country.”
“This is a great day for Sarnia, to have a national event in our
community that will include televised games carried from coast to
coast,” said Mayor Mike Bradley. “Like we have done with other
major events, I’m confident Sarnia will repay the confidence that
has been shown in us by Hockey Canada and the OWHA.”
Tourism Sarnia Lambton officials, who prepared the bid in conjunction
with the SSEC and the OWHA, are ecstatic with this major coup.
“Sports tourism is one of our community’s greatest strengths and
we will welcome athletes from all the provinces, with an unforgettable
reception,” promised Vicky Praill, TSL’s Special Events and Group
Marketing Coordinator.
A media conference will be held in Sarnia at the SSEC in June to
announce event details, which are being finalized later this month.
