SARNIA READY TO WELCOME SOME OF THE NATION’S BEST WOMEN’S HOCKEY
PLAYERS
Sarnia, ON – The city of Sarnia, ON is getting ready to welcome
some of the best women players from across the country as they get
set to host the 2005 Esso Women's National Hockey Championship,
March 9th to 13th, with all games being played at the Sarnia Sports
and Entertainment Centre. This year’s Esso Women’s National
Championship features six players from Canada’s National Women’s
Team that will be competing at the upcoming IIHF World Women’s
Championship in April in Sweden.
The 2005 Esso Women's National Hockey Championship will be presented
by Hockey Canada, the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association,
and by the premier sponsors of Hockey Canada: Imperial Oil - Esso,
Bauer NIKE Hockey, RBC Financial Group, TELUS and TSN/RDS.
The official broadcasters of Hockey Canada: The Sports Network
(TSN) and their French equivalent, RDS will televise both semi-finals
for this year’s tournament and the final game. The semi-finals
will be played at 10:30am ET and 2:00pm ET on Saturday, March 12.
The Championship game will be televised on Sunday, March 13, game
time is 3:00pm ET. Please check your local listing for details.
"Our team of dedicated volunteers has worked extremely hard
to make this an enjoyable experience for everyone involved with
the Esso Women’s Nationals," said Fran Rider, Executive
Director of the OWHA. "We strongly believe that everyone taking
part will share some great memories as Sarnia welcomes some of the
best female hockey players in Canada."
This year's event will have 10 teams from 9 provinces in 2 pools
competing:
A POOL B POOL
Alberta PEI – Prince Edward Island
Ontario – Brampton Thunder Manitoba
Quebec – Montreal Axion New Brunswick
British Columbia Newfoundland & Labrador
Host – Toronto Aeros Nova Scotia
This is the second year that the championship will use the new
format introduced at last year’s Esso Women’s Nationals.
The teams are seeded into two five team pools based on last year’s
finish with the top seeded teams in pool A. In the A pool, the top
two teams after their round robin receive a bye to the semi finals.
The 4th and 5th place teams in the A pool play off in one quarter
final, while the 3rd placed team plays the team that finished 1st
(for consistency) in the B pool in the other quarter final on Friday.
In addition to the championship games, there will be several female
hockey development activities taking place during the week leading
up to the Championship weekend. The first event will be a Hockey
Canada Skills camp that will be held on Saturday, March 5th, followed
by an “Esso FUN day” to be held on Sunday March 6th.
On Friday, March 11th, the OWHA and the SSEC will be hosting a Breakfast
of Champions on the Championship Weekend which will feature both
an Officiating and a Coaching seminar on Saturday, March 12th. Finally,
on Sunday, March 13th, fans will get a chance to “Skate with
the Champions” from 9:30am to 11:00 am at the Sarnia Sports
and Entertainment Centre. This program will provide a chance for
young aspiring female hockey players to skate with their role models
participating in the EWN.
Esso has been involved as the title sponsor of the Women's National
Hockey Championship for the past ten years and has been a long-time
premier sponsor of Hockey Canada and of women's hockey. Karen Fraser,

Development programs for grassroots hockey that Esso has been such

Ticket packages for the 2005 Esso Women’s Championship are
still available. Tournament passes for all 29 games, including all
medal games, can be purchased for $59.00. Individual day passes
for round robin games are $12 while semi finals and medal games

SARNIA (ONTARIO) PRÊTE À ACCUEILLIR PARMI LES MEILLEURES JOUEUSES
DE HOCKEY DU CANADA
CALGARY, ALBERTA – La ville de Sarnia en est aux derniers
préparatifs en vue de la tenue du Championnat national de
hockey féminin Esso 2005. Ce championnat annuel, mettant
en vedette six joueuses membres de notre équipe nationale
féminine qui participera bientôt au Championnat mondial
de hockey féminin de l'IIHF, débutera le mercredi
9 mars, alors que tous les matchs seront disputés au Sarnia
Sports and Entertainment Centre.
Le Championnat national de hockey féminin Esso 2005 sera
présenté par Hockey Canada, l’Association de
hockey féminin de l’Ontario (AHFO), le Sarnia Sports
and Entertainment Centre et les principaux commanditaires de Hockey
Canada : Esso, Bauer NIKE Hockey, RBC Groupe Financier et TSN/RDS.
Les diffuseurs officiels de Hockey Canada, soit Le Réseau
des sports (RDS) et son pendant anglophone TSN, mettra en ondes
les deux demi-finales du tournoi et la grande finale, une première
pour un Championnat national au Canada. Les demi-finales auront
lieu le samedi 12 mars à 14h (Est) tandis que la finale prendra
place le dimanche 13 mars 2005 à 15h (Est).
« Notre équipe de bénévoles dévoués
a travaillé sans relâche pour faire du Championnat
une réussite absolue », a déclaré Fran
Rider, Directeur exécutive de l’AHFO. « Nous
sommes persuadés que chaque personne qui participera de près
ou de loin à cet événement en gardera un souvenir
impérissable alors que Sarnia accueillera la crème
du hockey féminin au Canada. »
Dix équipes provenant de neuf provinces et réparties
en deux poules se disputeront les honneurs du tournoi :

Ce sera la deuxième année que le championnat utilisera
la nouvelle formule introduite au Championnat Esso 2004. Les équipes
sont classées en deux poules de cinq équipes en fonction
de leur rang final au classement de l'an dernier. Les têtes
de série forment la poule A. À la suite du tournoi
à la ronde, les deux premières équipes dans
la poule A bénéficieront d'un laissez-passer pour
les demi-finales, les équipes au quatrième et cinquième
rang de la poule A joueront l'une contre l'autre en quart-de-finale,
alors que l'équipe qui terminera au troisième rang
dans la poule A rencontrera l'équipe qui aura terminé
au premier rang de la poule B dans l'autre quart-de-finale qui aura
lieu le vendredi. Les demi-finales auront lieu le samedi 12 mars
et les équipes gagnantes s'affronteront en grande finale
qui sera diffusée en direct sur le réseau RDS à
15 h 00 (HNE) le dimanche 13 mars.
En plus des matchs disputés dans le cadre du championnat,
plusieurs activités de développement auront lieu la
semaine du Championnat. La première activité sera
un atelier sur les techniques d'entraînement qui aura lieu
samedi le 5 mars, suivie d’une Journée de plaisir Esso,
qui aura lieu le dimanche 6 mars. Le vendredi 11 mars, le OWHA sera
hôte d’un déjeuner des Champions alors que le
weekend du championnat mettra en vedette des cours d’entraîneurs
et d’officiels le samedi 12 mars. Finalement, un événement
intitulé « Patiner avec les championnes » aura
lieu au cours de la journée de la grande finale, soit le
dimanche 13 mars, de 9 h30 à 11 h au Sarnia Sports and Entertainment
Centre. Ce sera l'occasion pour les futures championnes de patiner
avec leurs modèles d'identification.
Esso est le commanditaire principal du Championnat national de
hockey féminin depuis maintenant dix ans; l'entreprise est
également un commanditaire de longue date de Hockey Canada
et du hockey féminin. Mme Karen Fraser, directrice des commandites
de commercialisation chez Esso, est satisfaite de l'évolution
des programmes de développement locaux du hockey au sein
des collectivités auxquels Esso participe activement. «
Par l'entremise de programmes comme les médailles Esso au
mérite sportif et certificats de participation, les Journées
de plaisir Esso et le programme Esso de soutien à la communauté,
Esso, en collaboration avec ses concessionnaires et ses partenaires
commerciaux, contribue au développement du hockey au sein
des collectivités de partout au Canada ».
Il est toujours possible de se procurer des billets pour le championnat
2005. Les laissez-passer pour le tournoi sont offerts au prix de
59 $. Les billets individuels pour le tournoi à la ronde
sont offerts au prix de 12$ tandis que les billets pour les demi-finales
et la grande finale sont offerts au prix de 15 $. Il est également
