AND NATIONAL WOMEN’S TEAM CAPTAIN
CASSIE CAMPBELL ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
CALGARY, ALBERTA – Hockey Canada announced on Wednesday that Cassie
Campbell, a three-time Olympian and Captain of Canada’s National
Women’s Team since 2001, is retiring from competitive hockey.
Campbell, 32, is the only Canadian hockey player, male or female,
to captain two Canadian teams to Olympic gold medals.
In 157 career international games with Canada ’s National Women’s
Team, Campbell amassed 100 points, including 32 goals and 68 assists.
Since being named captain on November 27, 2001, Campbell has worn
the ‘C’ for Canada in all fifty international games in which she
has dressed. With Campbell as its Team Captain, Canada ’s National
Women’s Team captured two Olympic gold medals, one World Championship
gold medal, one World Championship silver medal and one Four Nations
Cup.
Campbell has been with Canada ’s National Women’s Team since the
1993-94 season, making her first international appearance at the
1994 World Women’s Championship. Over the course of her career,
the native of Brampton, ON has captured a total of 17 gold medals
and 20 medals in international competition, including: two Olympic
gold medals (2002, 2006), one Olympic silver medal (1998), six World
Championship gold medals (1994, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004) and
one World Championship silver medal (2005).
Campbell began her career with Canada ’s National Women’s Team
as a defenceman, before moving to forward for the 1998-99 season.
At the 1997 IIHF World Women’s Championship, Campbell was named
to the All-Star Team as a defenceman.
Campbell will continue to be heavily involved in grass roots hockey
programs, including the Chevrolet Safe and Fun Hockey Program, along
with former NHL greats Mike Bossy and Bobby Orr. Campbell will also
continue to be an ambassador with Ronald McDonald’s Children Charities,
and will continue making corporate motivational speeches across
Canada . Campbell will also be a television analyst on all of TSN’s
international and national women’s hockey broadcasts this season,
beginning with the Four Nations Cup in November.
Following four years with the University of Guelph from 1992 to
1996, Campbell embarked on an equally successful club team career,
joining North York in the Central Ontario Women’s Hockey League
for the 1996-97 season, followed by two seasons with the Beatrice
Aeros (now named the Toronto Aeros) of the National Women’s Hockey
League (NWHL) and four seasons with the Calgary Oval Xtreme, three
in the NWHL (2000-04) and one season (2004-05) in the Western Women’s
Hockey League (WWHL).
“While it is difficult for me to retire from the game that has
given me such pleasure, I can now look back with great fondness
on my time with the National Team and my years playing hockey,”
said Campbell . “I would like to take this time to thank Hockey
Canada , all my former teammates as well all my coaches, my friends
and family and all of the fans across the country for all their
support over the course of my career.”

her tremendous success with the National Women’s Team,” said Bob

continue to be an ambassador for the women’s game, as well as a
role model and hero to thousands of young girls playing hockey in

CASSIE CAMPBELL ANNONCE SA RETRAITE
CALGARY, ALBERTA – Hockey Canada a annoncé, mercredi, que Cassie
Campbell, trois fois médaillée olympique et capitaine de l’équipe
nationale féminine depuis 2001, se retire du hockey de compétition.
Campbell, âgée de 32 ans, est la seule joueuse canadienne de hockey
masculin et féminin confondus, à avoir été capitaine de deux équipes
olympiques médaillées d’or.
En 157 matchs internationaux avec l’équipe nationale féminine du
Canada, Campbell a cumulé 100 points, y compris 32 buts et 68 aides.
Depuis qu’elle a été nommée capitaine le 27 novembre 2001, Campbell
a porté le «C» pour le Canada lors de tous les matchs internationaux
auxquels elle a pris part. Avec Campbell comme capitaine, l’équipe
nationale féminine du Canada a remporté deux médailles d’or olympique,
une médaille d’or au championnat mondial, une médaille d’argent
au championnat mondial et une Coupe des quatre nations.
Campbell fait partie de l’équipe nationale féminine du Canada depuis
la saison 1993-94 alors qu’elle a participé à son premier match
international lors du Championnat mondial féminin 1994. Au fil de
sa carrière, la jeune femme originaire de Brampton, Ontario, a remporté
17 médailles d’or et 20 médailles au hockey international, y compris
deux médailles d’or olympique (2002, 2006), une médaille d’argent
olympique (1998), six médailles d’or aux championnats mondiaux (1994,
1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004) et une médaille d’argent au championnat
mondial (2005).
Campbell a entrepris sa carrière au sein de l’équipe nationale
féminine comme défenseure puis est passée à l’avant pour la saison
1998-99. Lors du Championnat mondial féminin 1997 de l’IIHF, Campbell
a été nommée à l’équipe des étoiles du championnat comme défenseure.
Campbell continuera de participer à des programmes de hockey communautaire,
y compris le programme Hockey sûr et amusant Chevrolet avec les
anciens grands de la LNH, Mike Bossy et Bobby Orr. Campbell continuera
aussi d’agir comme ambassadrice auprès des œuvres de charité Ronald
McDonald pour enfants et de donner des conférences sur la motivation
d’un bout à l’autre du Canada. De plus, Campbell sera commentatrice
à TSN pour tous les tournois internationaux et nationaux de hockey
féminin cette saison à compter de la Coupe des quatre nations présentée
en novembre.
Après quatre ans à l’Université Guelph de 1992 à 1996, Campbell
a aussi connu beaucoup de succès auprès de ses équipes de clubs
se joignant d’abord à North York dans la Ligue de hockey féminin
du centre de l’Ontario pour la saison 1996-97, suivi de deux saisons
avec les Aeros de Beatrice (maintenant les Aeros de Toronto) de
la Ligue nationale de hockey féminin (LNHF) puis de quatre saisons
avec l’Oval X-Treme de Calgary dont trois saisons dans la LNHF (2000-04)
et une saison (2004-05) dans la Ligue de hockey féminin de l’Ouest
(WWHL).
«Bien que ce soit difficile pour moi de me retirer du jeu qui m’a
donné tant de plaisir, je me souviendrai de mon temps avec l’équipe
nationale féminine et de mes années au hockey avec beaucoup d’affection»,
a dit Campbell. «J’aimerais profiter de l’occasion pour remercier
Hockey Canada, toutes mes anciennes coéquipières, mes amis et ma
famille et tous les partisans partout au pays pour leur appui tout
au long de ma carrière.»
«Les contributions de Cassie Campbell au hockey féminin vont bien
au-delà de son incroyable succès avec l’équipe nationale féminine»,
