ONTARIO WOMEN’S HOCKEY ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES
ITS 2009 NATIONAL WOMEN’S UNDER 18 CHAMPIONSHIP ROSTERS

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO

Forty of Ontario’s best female hockey players have been selected to play for Team Ontario at Hockey Canada’s prestigious National Women’s Under 18 National Championship to take place November 4 to 9, 2009 in Surrey, B.C.

The Championship is an eight-team competition featuring many of Canada’s prominent young players. Team Ontario Red will compete in Pool A along with Team Ontario Blue, Team Atlantic and Team Saskatchewan. Team Alberta, Team British Columbia, Team Manitoba and Team Quebec will compete in Pool B. All teams play a round robin within their pool. The top two teams from each pool move into cross-over games to decide who will advance to the gold and bronze medal games. The third and fourth place teams from each pool will play a final cross-over game.

In addition to showcasing exceptional players, the event will also feature high performance female game officials from across the country.

The Ontario Women's Hockey Association teams each consist of twenty players plus team staff. Participants were selected from over 300 talented players who participated in the selection process. There are several thousand players in the eligible age group who participate on competitive teams within the OWHA.

A women’s national Under 18 competition takes place annually including the Canada Winter Games every fourth year. Team Ontario Red enters this year’s National Women’s Under 18 Championship as top seed having won the 2009 Under 18 National Championship in Napanee, Ontario. Fourteen players on the OWHA’s 2009 Team Ontario Red and three on Team Ontario Blue played in the 2008 Under 18 National Championship.

The 2008-2009 season marked the second season for the inaugural IIHF Under 18 World Championship held in Fussen, Germany. Jamie Lee Rattray was a member of Team Canada’s silver medal team. In August 2009 Team Canada won a series against Team USA. Erica Howe, Shannon Doyle, Lauren Kelly, Erin Ambrose, Hannah Armstrong, Carly Mercer, Kelly Terry and Jamie Lee Rattray all played for Team Canada.  

Players who have skated for Ontario on OWHA Under 18 teams on their path to Canada’s National Women’s Team include Meghan Agosta, Gillian Apps, Amanda Benoit-Wark, Cassie Campbell, Gillian Ferrari, Chelsea Grills, Jayna Hefford, Samantha Holmes, Brianne Jenner, Rebecca Johnston, Heather Logan, Krista McArthur, Cherie Piper, Lara Perks, Cheryl Pounder, Ashley Riggs, Jennifer Wakefield. Katie Weatherston and Sommer West.
