2005 UNDER 18 NATIONAL CHALLENGE
U-18 Supports Windsor Wildcats
Congratulations to Team Ontario Red on their gold medal win at the 2005 Canadian Under-18 Women’s Hockey Challenge in Salmon Arm, BC. Team Ontario Red played solid hockey throughout the tournament winning all 5 games while scoring 31 goals and allowing only 2 goals against.
Congratulations also to Team Ontario Blue on their 6th place finish. Team Ontario Blue also played great hockey losing two tough overtime games and missing the medal round despite outshooting their opponents.
The OWHA is very proud of our two Under-18 teams that represented Ontario at the 2005 Canadian Under-18 Women’s Hockey Challenge. They are exceptional athletes and great role models.
Before the championship game, Team Ontario Red dedicated the match to the team members, families and friends of the Windsor Wildcats Intermediate “BB” team. A bus carrying the Windsor Wildcats team collided with a tractor-trailer, Saturday January 29th, near Rochester, New York. Team Ontario Red players wore blue tape (Wildcat’s colour) around their shin pads in a show of support to the Windsor Wildcat team.
Team Ontario officials received word of the tragic accident just prior to the semi-final game on Saturday. The Salmon Arm Host Committee arranged a room where all Ontario players and staff could meet after the semi-final game. Support from the Host Committee and competing teams was exceptional. Gestures of support for the Windsor team were shown through roses given to each Ontario player from the Salmon Arm community, a fruit basket from Team Alberta and a card from Team Saskatchewan. Before the gold medal game, Team Alberta presented their provincial banner signed by the Alberta squad. All support was gratefully received by the Ontario teams on behalf of the Windsor Wildcat Intermediate “BB” team.
To assist the Team Ontario players, staff and families, Pastor Myron Crown, who was also the game announcer for the event, held a service on Sunday morning.
Two Windsor Wildcat Intermediate “AA” players competed in the Under-18 Challenge. Meghan Agosta, captain of Team Ontario Red and Shannon Bowman, captain of Team Ontario Blue are both members of the Sun Parlour Female Hockey Association.
At the start of the sold out gold medal final a minute of silence was observed in support of the team members, families and friends of the young Windsor team.
The female hockey community across Canada has been impacted by this tragedy. The thoughts and prayers of everyone in the country are with the Windsor Wildcats Intermediate “BB” Team, their families and friends.
