IIHF CANCELS 2003 WOMEN’S WORLD HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP IN BEIJING,
CHINA
CALGARY, ALBERTA – The IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation)
announced on Sunday that the 2003 IIHF Women’s World Hockey
Championship had been cancelled due to health and safety concerns,
forcing Canada’s National Women’s Team to cancel its
travel plans to Beijing, China.
“The situation (SARS pneumonia) took a drastic turn to the
worse in the last few days and again after consulting our medical
experts, we decided that canceling or postponing the championship
was the only responsible thing”, said IIHF President René
Fasel. (from IIHF news release)
“We’re very disappointed for our players but commend
the IIHF for putting the safety of the athletes and teams first,”
said Bob Nicholson, President of the Canadian Hockey Association.
“Canadians can be very proud of this team, as it has continued
to be very professional and thorough in its preparations despite
the uncertainty of the Championship.”
The IIHF said in a release that it “will shortly decide whether
to operate the 2003 IIHF World Women Championship at a later date”.
“The athletes and staff have worked extremely hard this week
in Calgary, AB,” said Head Coach Karen Hughes. “There
is no doubt in my mind that this group of players and staff would
have made Canada proud next week at the World Championship.”

Canada’s National Women’s Team is still scheduled to
practice at 3:45 pm (MT) at the Father David Bauer Olympic Arena.

LA IIHF ANNULE LE CHAMPIONNAT MONDIAL DE HOCKEY FÉMININ
2003 À BEIJING, EN CHINE
CALGARY (ALBERTA) – La IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation)
a annoncé dimanche que le Championnat mondial de hockey féminin
2003 de l’IIHF a été annulé en raison
des inquiétudes pour la santé et la sécurité
des participants, forçant l’équipe nationale
féminine d’annuler ses plans de voyage pour Beijing,
en Chine.
« La situation (pneumonie SARS) a pris un tournant inquiétant
au cours des dernières journées et après avoir
consulter avec nos experts en medicine, nous avons decider qu’annuler
ou de reporter le championnat représentait la seule option
responsable », a dit le président de l’IIHF René

« Nous sommes très deçus pour nos joueuses
mais nous félicitons la IIHF d’avoir prioriser la sécurité
des athlètes et des équipes, » a dit Bob Nicholson,
président de l’Association canadienne de hockey. «
Tous les canadiens peuvent être très fiers de cette
équipe, qui a continue à se preparer de façon
professionnelle et dévouée en dépis des l’incertitude
entourant le championnat. »
La IIHF a annoncé dans un communiqué que «
la IIHF décidera bientôt si le Championnat mondial
de hockey féminin 2003 de l’IIHF aura lieu du tout
ou plutôt à une date ultérieure. »
« Les athlètes et le personnel ont travaillé
très fort cette semaine à Calgary, » a dit l’entraîneure-chef
Karen Hughes. “Je n’ai aucun doute que ce groupe de
joueuses et le personnel aurait donné un rendement au championnat
la semaine prochaine dont le Canada aurait été fier.
